What is a domain?

A domain or domain name is a (mostly) commonly remembered text that is linked to an IP Address that stores the location of files on the internet. A domain name is usually easier to remember than an IP address which is a sequence of numbers.

Well, this is a mouthful, what exactly does this mean?

In laments terms, a domain is a user-friendly (easy to remember) location for your website. For example, Vital Dev’s domain name is vitaldev.co.za

A domain name can be at most 63 characters. Although it is possible to create a domain name with 63 characters, it is not recommended. This is because if you look at the first paragraph, a domain name is used for your website to be easily remembered. Clients or users should be able to remember your domain name easily and type it effectively.

Where is a domain name used?

A domain name is used for your website, as well as emails. Let’s unpack that statement below:

If you want to visit our website, you will go to: https://vitaldev.co.za

If you want to write us an email, you will write to: info@vitaldev.co.za

Note that the domain name is present in both the URL as well as the email address. This is why it is super important to register the correct domain. You will only be able to create email addresses with this exact domain once you have registered the domain.
